One thing that Goodwood is very good at is creating a lot of audible noise, whether it is the unsilenced race days, 'members meetings', aircraft disregarding the noise abatement procedures, ancient WW2 airplanes, discos, firework displays, aircraft overflying built up areas, helicopters, category 2 track days or the Breakfast Club - all major contributions to local noise pollution.

Category 2 and Category 3 noise levels are 'controlled', it's not perfect by a long way but at least the effort is commendable. The main noise contenders are the unsilenced race days and the WW2 planes. It is totally inapropriate to keep these noisy Harvards, Spitfires and Mustang so close to built up areas.

One problem with aircraft is that Runway 24 is aimed straight at the north of Chichester with the end of the runway only a few hundred yards from a built-up area. That is certain to produce noise complaints. The reason that Runway 24 exists at all is simply the prodominant wind direction in Chichester is from the South-West. If the wind direction changes, say, to the North-East, Chichester doesn't get the noise of planes taking off but the noise from the racetrack is greater, and especially on unsilenced days the racket is horrendous.

Now of course. some people in the north of Chichester and the sorrounding villages don't mind the noise and actually 'enjoy' aircraft flying over their rooftops. And for those who don't, it is an invasion of privacy so do we have a right to a quiet life? When the 10th.Duke of Richmond was alive, Goodwood was a much quieter place and since 1998, thanks to CDC, these high levels of noise have been imposed on the community basically for the benefit of the few against the concerns of the many.

With the ever increasing pressure on land for housing in the South, the land around the Airfield is always a target. In 2015 Goodwood managed to keep development out of the 400m buffer zone. Now that the threat of the Northern Bypass has gone away, Goodwood will continue to be a noisy neighbour.

So what are we proposing for this website. At the moment some pages are under construction, there is a lot of data to evaluate, but we will see where it goes.
